Treats

Nana's box arrived in the mail yesterday. Alicia enjoyed the late burst of additional gifts. She immediately donned her new soft pink scarf set and started munching on the little tub of goodies.

Willard's tub of cookies arrived at the same time. So there were lots of yummy treats to enjoy last night!

Speaking of yumminess, here's a birthday cake I concocted last week. It's a honey carrot cake (made with no refined sugar... just honey) in the shape of a ham & cheese sandwich. Mmmmm mmm good. :o)

North Pole & Chena Hot Springs Trip Report

We drove north from Chugiak at 10:30am on Friday morning. The sun was just risen in the cold winter sky.

Tess's friend Morgan had arrived at 8am to join us on the ride to North Pole for the weekend. We loaded up the van and the topper with firewood, air mattresses, sleeping bags and flashlights, and then we hit the road.

We stopped briefly in Wasilla to fill the gas tank and get some Starbucks.

My plan had been to leave around 8am so that all driving done in unfamiliar territory would be done during the daylight hours. But since we got a late start, the sun set by the time we got to Healy, just north of the entrance to Denali National Park, about two hours south of Fairbanks.

We arrived at North Pole (just past Fairbanks) at 5:25pm. Just enough time to visit Santa and the reindeer before he took a break for the night (at 6pm).

We followed the visit with Santa with some delicious chinese food at the Pagoda Restaurant nearby.

Then we headed back through Fairbanks, where we picked up another of Tess's friends, Melissa. She'd driven up with her sister earlier that day.

By 9:00 or so, we arrived at our cabin 32 miles out the Chena Hot Springs Road. We made quick work at starting a fire to drive out the cold inside the cabin. The temperatures outside were around 18 below 0 and dropping. The girls stayed in the warm van while the fire got going in the wood stove. I unfurled the air mattresses and sleeping bags. We loaded everything from the van into the cabin, including Little Bit who assumed her position on her bed in front of the wood stove.

Alicia was already asleep, so we tucked her into her sleeping bag next to Sissy's and she slept on.

The cabin was cozy with the woodstove. But the temps fluctuated between freezing and roasting. Some of this depended on which bunk you had. I was freezing for much of that first night. But most folks were warm. The second night we were all roasting most of the night.

We searched in vain for the styrofoam seat cover which usually hangs in the outhouse to keep the chill off your tush from the freezing toilet seat. So on Saturday, when I took the older girls into Fairbanks, I purchased a sheet of foam rubber and concocted two new seat covers which helped immensely!

After returning from Fairbanks, we packed our swimsuits and towels and headed further up the Chena Hot Springs Road to the resort at mile 57 (end of the road). We had dinner at the restaurant there, which is pricy, but good food. Then we walked across to the swimming building.

The door exiting to the outdoor rock lake was completely encased in ice, like a freezer that needs defrosting. Donned in only a swimsuit, we pushed the icy door open and exited onto an icy path across which we dashed to get into the piping hot rock lake. The outdoor temp was 25 below 0. Our bare feet stuck to the super cold ice on the path. Sort of an Alaskan foot spa.... exfoliation.

Soaking in the hot springs was very pleasant. However, our hair froze immediately. I heard two women talking in the locker room who said they'd both had their hair break off in such conditions in the past. Yikes.

Alicia spent most of her time playing in the indoor heated pool. She did venture outside once to a nearby hot tub briefly. But she did not like her hair freezing, so we made a rapid retreat. You have to be "18 and older" to go in the rock lake. We claimed the older girls were all 18.

We had stoked the woodstove prior to leaving for the hot springs. And we arrived back to find Little Bit still toasty warm on her sleeping bag.

The girls worked on a 700 piece puzzle late into the night and finally finished it entirely by lantern light.

In the morning, we packed up before the sun rose and headed into Fairbanks. We dropped off Melissa with her sister, rearranged the overloaded van, and headed south toward home. Alicia had to be back before 6pm when she was playing the role of an angel in the church Christmas Pageant.

During the ride home, the girls watched movies on the portable DVD player and Tess's laptop. I listened to Christmas music.

The drive home took about 7.5 hours with a couple brief stops along the way. The roads were good and the temperatures rose as we got closer to home. It was about 25 degrees above zero at the house.

We had a great time on the weekend trip and we look forward to doing it again next year.

Sing

This is Tess's solo from the recent Chugiak High School Choir Concert. This will be my first attempt at embedding a video into this blog. So wish me luck.

December Update

Sorry for the lapse.

Here's a summary of our December thus far:

Holiday Train was cancelled due to avalanche danger. Total let down. Thus no photos or trip report.

I ditched all further gingerbread plans after the collapse of my super-innovative 3-tier gingerbread cake with 50 candy cane candles to celebrate Alaska's 50th Birthday. The collapse was completely my fault as I forgot to stabilize the tiers. I tossed the whole thing in the trash and gave up on all gingerbread creations till next year.

Alicia is enjoying the holiday season. That's not to say that she's being a good girl. Actually she's rather concerned that she won't get anything off her list to Santa because she's pretty sure she's on the Naughty List. I told her she could certainly work to get off the Naughty List, but she claims that's not possible because when Santa put her on that list, he wasn't writing in pencil.

So there you have it.

We've been to several holiday bazaars and seen Santa on several occasions. Each time Santa asks Alicia what she wants for Christmas she tells him she's made a list and plans to deliver it to him at his house in the North Pole. So she just takes the candy cane offered and skips off.

We are planning our trip to the North Pole next weekend, along with a 2-night stay in the Chena River cabin and a visit to the Chena Hot Springs which are north of Fairbanks.

Tess had her last high school Christmas choir concert this past Thursday evening. She sang a solo of "Christmas Shoes", which is, of course, a tear-jerker song. She looked great in a sparkly red dress she'd borrowed from a friend. And she did a great job with the song. I think she was relieved when it was over! I got it on video. As soon as I learn how to post videos on here, I'll put it up.

Today we're finally going to cut down our Christmas tree at the Matanuska Moose Range up past Sutton about 30 miles north of home. After that, we'll go to the Colony Christmas celebration in Palmer which includes a gingerbread house competition (which I'm not entering after all...), horse-drawn wagon rides, snowmachine-drawn sled rides, cookie contest, craft bazaars, a parade of lights, and fireworks.

The days are getting to their shortest lengths. The sun doesn't rise till after 10am and sets just after 3:30 in the afternoon. So when planning activities like tromping around the moose-filled woods looking for a Christmas tree, timing is everything. This year we're planning to bring snowshoes to better deal with the deep snow. Last year involved a lot of trailbreaking.

Alicia is currently "rocking around" a 12" tall Christmas tree she's set in the middle of the floor. She thinks we should put the big Christmas tree smack in the middle of the living room so we can "rock around" it. We'll see.

Weekend Plans

Stephen is in Seattle all this week for a class. He gets home around midnight on Friday night. Then we have to be at the train station in Anchorage at 6am on Saturday morning to catch the Seward Holiday Train.

We're taking Alicia on the Holiday Train this year. And our friends the Collinses will also be aboard (Phoebe & Mallory). Santa will board the train in Girdwood as we travel south towards Seward.

It should be a long, fun day. There's some sort of holiday festival in Seward. Then we'll board the train in the afternoon for the trip back to Anchorage.
