Birthday and B-ball Review

Go Sissy Go!

Go Chugiak!

Tess had a good game on Monday night. She scored 100% of her shots! Okay, she only took 2 shots, but she made them both!

Here are a few additional photos from Alicia May's 3rd birthday. Little Bit really enjoyed wearing the party hat as you can see from the look on her face.

After we celebrated with cake, ice cream and gifts at the house, we ventured to Chuck E. Cheese in Anchorage for lots of games and little kiddie rides. We'd been carting around about 200 tokens in the back of the van left over from a previous visit where the crowds proved too much for my over-stressed psyche. So we left abruptly with a large stash of unspent tokens!

This time we used many (but not all!) of the tokens and won/bought a giant Chuck E. ball for the birthday girl.

Birthday Eve!

Tess has been playing hard on the court. Here she is doing a little defense.

She was accepted by the Rose Urban Rural Exchange program to travel to the village of Akiak at the end of March and live with a family there for a week. The following week, a boy from that village will come and stay with us. He will be a "Rural Ambassador" and Tess will be an "Urban Ambassador". Doesn't that sound really cool?

We are only hours away from someone's 3rd birthday.... I spent all afternoon making this awesome Dora cake. It took 4.5 hours and we all agree, it looks amazing! Alicia loves it, and that's what matters most!

Our snowbanks have been restocked for tomorrow's sledding fun at the birthday party. We've actually been dumped on in the past few days. I think we got close to a foot of new snow. Perfect!

The White Stuff

Fluffy snow is falling from the sky. Sometimes I can understand why the Alaska Natives have so many words for snow... It does take numerous forms. I wonder what the word is for little-powdery-snow-
that-falls-after-a-January-thaw-covering-the-icy-layer-below-
with-a-deceptive-coating-of-white-fluffiness-when-really-it's-
slick-as-dog-snot-and-you-may-just-land-on-your-keester!

It was in the upper 40s yesterday. Lots of melting and wind. But it's back in the 20s today and things should get back to normal by this weekend's birthday party which is supposed to involve a little front yard sledding!

Here's the news from the North...

Tess has applied to participate in the Rose Urban Rural Exchange. I believe you can learn more about the program at their website.

If she's chosen, she'll be one of 5 Chugiak students spending a week in the rural southwest Alaska village of Akiak which is on the Kuskokwim River. I think the population of Akiak is around 300. Once the week in Akiak is complete, 5 students from that village will come spend a week here with us. I hope she's chosen as I think it would be a great eye-opening experience for her. The 300 or so folks in Akiak are mostly Yup'ik (Alaska Native).

In other news, we've been trying to plan our summer adventures. We've got a reservation at a cabin on Nancy Lakes for the end of May and then a USFS cabin down on Russian Lake on the Kenai Peninsula for mid-July. We're hoping to have some out of town guests visiting with us for the Kenai cabin. That one is said to have great fishing and lots of bears nearby. (Okay, so bears and fishing go hand-in-hand in the summer time in Alaska...)

Reservations for the prime cabins are pretty competitive. The federal ones (i.e., USFS) are available to reserve 180 days in advance. They're only $45/night so they get snapped up within seconds of being available. Literally!

Well, I'm off on a date to see The Bucket List.

Candlelight Ambience

Okay, this picture has nothing to do with anything. But isn't she just a cutie!?

The power went out last night around 6:15pm. It finally came back on around 9:15pm. Hopefully, we've met our quota for power outages this winter. It did flip off and on several times during the night. But I don't think it stayed off long enough to affect the heat situation.

Note to self: Put flashlights, candles, and matches where I can find them in the dark.

2nd Note to self: Do not bury all firewood under snowbanks in the yard. Some of it probably should be stored someplace dry!

Winter Trails Day

Today was Winter Trails Day here in Alaska and around the country. We spent it at the Hatcher Pass Recreation Area managed by the State of Alaska Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation.

There were lots of opportunities to try out different winter sports like skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, skijoring (skiing with your dog), and ski skating. There were also Search and Rescue demos and avalanche safety presentations. But we weren't able to get going early enough to catch those.

The temperatures were in the negative numbers. But we managed to stay warm enough thanks to multiple layers and some hand and feet heating devices.

Tess & Donald to the right start up the sled hill at Hatcher Pass. Some other folks are snowshoeing and skiing on the trails nearby.

Winter sunlight over Hatcher Pass Lodge at the Upper Mountain sledding area.

Alicia May had a super time sledding!

Donald flies down the hill from above.

Tess makes her way down the hill toward the tiny cars in the parking lot below.

We all took turns sledding. I found that if you want your hood packed with snow, all you need to do is attempt to avoid hitting a boulder by putting your boot heels into the snow alongside your hurtling sled. You will instantly be plastered by a frigid coating of snow.

You see in Stephen's picture, he's doing very well at keeping his boots well above the rapidly passing snowy slope. His main problem was a sled with a tendency to spin him around backwards.

After a couple of hours of sledding and cross-country skiing, we headed for the Chowder House just outside Hatcher Pass. We'd seen the place on the way up to the Pass and planned to stop in later to warm ourselves up from the inside out. We were not disappointed. We had corn chowder and smoked salmon chowder. Warm and yummy! Then we polished it off with awesome brownie sundaes and peach pie a la mode! The walls of the restaurant were lined with maps of all sorts. That's my kind of place!

Let it snow...

The snow's been coming down for a few days now and is not expected to stop anytime soon...

Most folks are pretty happy about this. Because without snow, it's difficult to do most of the things that we enjoy about winter in Alaska. These include: skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and snowmobiling.

Unfortunately, the snow does have one major downside. I like to call them "drivers in denial". These are the dingalings who blast past you in the breakdown lane on the highway as if the road is not one giant ice rink. Then, when they spin out and end up in the ditch or worse, crumpled against someone's bumper, they serve to shut down all traffic for hours on end.

So while it's nice to have the snow, it does make for a considerably longer commute at both ends of the work day.

You may recall that I've mentioned there only being one road into and out of Anchorage. If Dingaling Driver in Denial has managed to shut it down, there's little alternative to sitting there on the highway until the wreck's been cleared. Thank goodness for books on CD!

Cold Snap...

Two and a half more minutes of daylight today. But who's counting?

The temperature was 6 degrees F when I woke up this morning. I believe we're expecting a high in the low teens today. A little nippy. But since we're not really standing around in it, it has minimal effect on us.

Tess has basketball practice this morning and then needs to be driven to her friend's house down near the Eagle River Nature Center to work on a school project. This is the last weekend of Christmas Break. I think I'll be taking one or both of the teens to the mall today to spend any gift cards they got for Christmas prior to returning to the fashion show known nationally as "high school".

We had Tess babysit Alicia May for us last night when we went out to dinner and a movie. We tried Johann's restaurant in Eagle River for the first time. One of my colleagues recommended it. We were not disappointed! Then we went to see Charlie Wilson's War. Again, not disappointed...

Happy New Year 2008!

We did end up going to the waterpark the other day (Sunday), after Tess was done snowboarding.

Just Alicia, Tess, Robyn, and I were there. Donald was working and Stephen was feeling under the weather.

Tess and Robyn went down the MasterBlaster a few times and spent most of the rest of their time in the hot tub, soaking their weary bones.

The crowd was small, which was very nice. We stayed about 2 hours and then dried off and headed for home.

Alicia May received two of her favorite fun things for Christmas this year: Play-doh and finger paints!

We played with the Play-doh on New Year's Eve. And we used the finger paints this morning as our first activity of the New Year! We're off to a great start!

Later this afternoon, I succeeded in converting the "dining room" into a scrapbook area! I finished a few pages today. I had a giant stack of photos printed to represent our "year in photos" from 2007. We were busy! Now I'm far behind on the scrapbooking process...

Stephen spent New Year's Day replacing the hinges on my passenger side door of the van. When we went to Chena, Stephen attempted to get out and check the luggage topper which was getting rocked by the gusting wind. The wind ripped the door out of his grasp and bent the hinges, it was so strong! The guy at the dealership didn't seem surprised to hear this story. He must hear it a lot.

Anyway... our New Year is off to a pleasant start. The days are getting infinitesimally longer every day. Soon we'll be basking again in 20 hours of daylight each day... Ahh, blissful hope!
